Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting: A Step-by-Step Checklist

Nothing happens at all

Check the obvious first: is the opener plugged in, and has the circuit breaker or GFCI outlet tripped? Many garage circuits share a GFCI with an outdoor outlet, so a wet exterior socket can kill the opener. If the wall button works but remotes do not, it is a remote problem. If neither works, it is power or the logic board.

The door reverses immediately after touching the floor

This is the down-force or travel-limit setting. The opener thinks it has hit an obstruction. Look for the adjustment screws or buttons on the opener housing and make small changes — a quarter turn at a time. If adjustment does not fix it, check the track for a worn roller binding near the bottom of travel.

The door will not close and the light blinks

A blinking opener light is nearly always the photo-eye safety sensors. Check that both sensor lenses are clean, that nothing is between them, and that the indicator lights on both units are steady rather than flickering. A sensor knocked out of alignment by a bike or a bin is the single most common cause of a door that will not close.

The motor runs but the door does not move

On a chain or belt drive, this usually means a stripped nylon drive gear or a disconnected trolley. First check whether the emergency release cord has been pulled — re-engaging it is free. If the trolley is connected and the motor still spins uselessly, the gear kit needs replacing.

Remotes work intermittently or only up close

Weak batteries first. If new batteries do not help, you may have radio interference from an LED bulb in the opener — cheap LED lamps are notorious for it — or a failing antenna wire. Try a standard bulb temporarily to rule it out.

The opener is loud, jerky or slow

This is frequently not the opener at all. An unbalanced door forces the opener to work far harder than designed. Disconnect the trolley and lift the door by hand: if it is heavy or will not stay put halfway, the springs need attention before the opener does.

When to replace instead of repair

If the unit is over fifteen years old, has no photo-eye sensors, uses a fixed code remote, or needs a logic board plus a gear kit, replacement usually wins on cost. A modern belt-drive or wall-mount unit is also dramatically quieter and adds battery backup for power cuts.
