Costs
Why two quotes for the same symptom can differ by hundreds, and how to read an estimate properly.
Homeowners tend to ask what a repair costs, but the same symptom has very different causes. A door that will not open might be a $0 fix — the release cord was pulled — or a sensor realignment at the low end, or a matched pair of torsion springs at the higher end. Any company that quotes a firm number over the phone without knowing which part failed is guessing.
Spring price depends on wire gauge, inside diameter, length and cycle rating. Doubles need two springs. High-cycle springs cost more up front and last two to three times longer, which is usually the better purchase on a door that opens five or more times a day. Replacing a single spring in a pair is cheaper today and more expensive within a year.
A sensor or remote issue is a minimal fix. A gear kit is modest. A logic board on an older unit often approaches the cost of a new opener, which is the point at which replacement becomes the rational choice. Belt-drive and wall-mount units cost more than chain drives and are considerably quieter.
Size first — a double door is not twice a single, but it is close. Then insulation value, panel construction, window inserts, and finish. Custom colours, carriage-house hardware and glass-and-aluminium panels sit at the top. New track and springs sized to the finished door weight are part of a proper installation, not an add-on.
A useful rule: when the repair estimate approaches roughly half the cost of a comparable new door, or when the door has rust through the bottom sections or multiple damaged panels, replacement is the better long-term spend. A single dented panel almost never justifies a full door.
Ask for the failed part named explicitly, the part number or spec where relevant, whether the quote includes labour and the call-out, and what the workmanship warranty covers. A written itemised estimate before work starts should be standard. If the number changes after the job, something went wrong in the quoting, not the repair.
